The City of Petersburg, Va., has not paid its waste and recycling provider, Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA), for its services since May. Currently, the city owes the provider $632,000.
CVWMA is now threatening to suspend its services if the city does not commit to a payment plan for its outstanding debt and future payments.

The company contracted by Petersburg for curbside trash removal and recycling is threatening to suspend its services if the city does not commit to a plan to pay the $632,000 it owes and make current payments on time.
In a letter to interim City Manager Dironna Moore Belton and Virginia Secretary of Finance Richard D. "Ric" Brown obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, an attorney representing the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority said that the city has not paid a full monthly invoice since May - despite billing households and collecting money for the services.
"The residents have been paying monthly fees to the city, but the city has not been remitting those fees to CVWMA," James M. Snyder, a Richmond-based attorney, wrote in the letter dated Aug. 12.
