Dozens of firefighters spent hours fighting a roaring fire at a Grand Rapids, Mich. recycling center early Monday morning, with an investigation underway.

Firefighters were called to PADNOS Front Street Recycling around 3 a.m. Monday morning to tackle a large fire. The recycling center was home to different types of metals and oils, according to Grand Rapids Fire Marshall Bill Smith. Nearly 60 firefighters in total were called to the scene and spent almost seven hours putting it out.

The structure was deemed unsafe, and the roof collapsed on the building. The fire is out but the public is advised to avoid the area as crews remained on the scene for several more hours, monitoring the remains. Smith said they are investigating how the fire began, noting that an early storm could have been a factor.

“Weather is certainly a possibility in the ignition sequence for this fire,” Smith said. “We are looking into that and have made inquiries with the National Weather Service.”
