Hauler Stresses Heat Safety for Collection Workers

Rumpke is working to ensure its employees working in the Louisville, Ky., metro area are staying cool enough in the summer heat.

One waste and recycling company in the Louisville, Ky., metro area is doing its best to make sure its collection workers understand how to stay cool when working in the summer heat.

WAVE 3 News reports that Rumpke said it encourages employees to wear loose fitting, light-colored clothing when out in the heat. The company also advises employees to drink about 8 ounces of water or sports drinks every 15 to 20 minutes, avoiding sugary drinks and caffeine and taking frequent breaks, the report notes.

Rumpke supervisors are also making it a point to meet drivers on their routes throughout the day to check in.

With WAVE Country being so hot and humid, most people are finding ways to get away from the heat, but some people have to work in it.

Employees at Rumpke Waste & Recycling are outside most of the day, trying to stay cool.

“This time of year, it’s especially tough on our drivers,” Josh McConnell, Rumpke’s Regional Safety Manager, said.
