Arizona’s La Paz County has agreed with Republic Services Inc. to operate its landfill and with a California county renewable energy generator to a waste-by-rail contract.

The county said in a news release that the agreements represent a new partnership approach combining the strengths of a municipally owned landfill with a waste and recycling company and an established rail operator.

The agreement with Phoenix-based Republic covers 10 years and provides a marketing role for the municipality. The county said the deal is worth more than $8 million for the public entity.

The country is entering the waste by rail market with its agreement with the Commerce (Calif.) Refuse to Energy Authority, a Los Angeles County renewable energy generator.

The landfill has more than 100 million tons of available airspace and a nearby rail siding with permitted right-of-way to the site. The county said it expects the new agreements to boost economic opportunities in the region.
