Casella Collects Signatures to for Southbridge Landfill Expansion in Massachusetts

In an effort to start a conversation with town councilors about an extension for its Southbridge Landfill, Casella Waste Systems is collecting signatures of support from local residents.

The landfill is currently permitted to accept 405,600 tons of municipal solid waste each year, and Casella expects the landfill to reach capacity by 2018. To keep its landfill open and running, the company is close to seeking an expansion that would require both state and local Board of Health approvals.

As town voters considered Clinton and Trump on Tuesday, employees of the state's largest municipal solid waste landfill operation gave them something else to think about.

Casella Waste Systems workers collected signatures in hopes of starting a dialogue with town councilors about whether the company should be allowed to stay in town.

At issue is the town-owned sanitary landfill on Barefoot Road, which is permitted to accept 405,600 tons of municipal solid waste each year, regardless of origin. Casella has been scaling back its acceptance of garbage as it expects the landfill to reach capacity in 2018. Casella is on the verge of seeking an expansion that would require state and local Board of Health approvals.
