The closure of the Baldwin County Landfill in Milledgeville, Ga., is drawing attention because it’s the first MSW landfill in the state being closed using a new process.
The landfill, which has a lot of steep slopes, will be turf-lined and then have sand placed on top of it. The sand would then be covered by cement-type mulch, which will help hold the sand in place, McMullen explained.
The Union-Recorder has more:
“We will probably make history,” McMullen said. “This is the first Municipal Solid Waste Landfill that has been closed in the state of Georgia with this (artificial turf) process. “We already have several individuals from several states that have come down and visited. We have a lot of EPD (Georgia Environmental Division) officials coming down because of this new process. It will be a showplace for the state of Georgia, and we will probably get written up in a few magazines and visited a lot.”
A black-colored artificial turf liner now covers a good portion of the landfill, McMullen said.
“All of the green vegetation that was there has now been cleaned off,” McMullen said. “So they are now about to come around that tail section with all of the dirt.”
