With all the wrangling occurring over the Newby Island Landfill, the town of Milpitas, Calif., signed a 20-year contract to dispose of its waste instead at Waste Management’s Guadalupe Recycling and Disposal Facilities near Almaden Quicksilver County Park.

But that plan has drawn the ire of San Jose Councilman Johnny Khamis, who has scheduled a public hearing for next week to discuss the deal.

The San Jose Mercury News has the details:

Waste Management expects to accept 22 to 37 truckloads of Milpitas trash each weekday at its Guadalupe landfill starting in September 2017, according to Khamis.

The 411-acre landfill is allowed to receive up to 3,650 tons of waste daily and currently takes in about 1,000. Milpitas will add 180 to 200 tons a day to the total.

More than 5,000 neighbors have signed an online petition opposing the plan, which they say will damage the environment, exacerbate traffic congestion, lower property values and produce odors.

Khamis said he organized last month's meeting after hearing residents' outcry over the plan.
