Michigan Recycling Diverted to Incinerator After Structure Damage to Facility
The Kent County Recycling and Education Center is closed for the foreseeable future due a wall collapsing earlier this week.
Earlier this week, a sidewall collapsed at the Kent County Recycling and Education Center in Kent County, Mich., closing the facility completely and halting local recycling.
For the immediate future, all area recyclables are being diverted to Kent County’s trash incinerator instead while the recycling facility is closed.
“The health and safety of our employees and customers is out No. 1 priority. We’re gathering a full assessment of the damage and will only reopen once repairs are made, and we know it’s safe for workers and visitors to enter,” Dar Baas, Department of Public Works (DPW) Director, said in a statement.
The culprit for the collapse appears to be bales of cardboard that shifted and pushed through the wall. This caused damage to a roof support beam and the exterior wall.
