The largest utility in New Jersey began working Wednesday to transform 40 acres of a former garbage dump into a 10.14-megawatt solar field, seven months after receiving approval from the planning board.
When built, the gleaming rows of solar panels on what used to be the Parklands landfill could provide enough electricity to power nearly 2,000 homes annually, Public Service Electric and Gas announced.
“Landfills like Parklands offer prime opportunities for large-scale solar development that benefit New Jersey and our customers,” said Joe Forline, the utility ’s vice president of customer solutions. “We can convert this property into a productive asset that adds to New Jersey’s inventory of renewable energy resources without reducing the state’s open space.”
