Seneca Meadows Landfill Employees Attended Town Board Meeting Unexpected

Last Thursday, approximately 50 Seneca Meadows Landfill employees showed up to the Seneca Falls Town Board meeting to discuss the possible enactment of Local Law No. 7 of 2016, which states that no solid waste management facility shall be constructed or allowed to continue operating within the town. Seneca Meadows is currently exempt from this law, but only while the state has an operating permit.
Seneca Meadows District Manager Kyle Black issued a statement at the meeting that claimed it would be a breach of the community benefits agreement between the landfill and the town if the law is adopted.
While a closed-door session was held at the board meeting about this matter, the board did not take action. Seneca Meadows applied for a 10-year extension in April, but no decision has been made on that front either.

Seneca Meadows Landfill was not on the agenda for Thursday’s special Town Board meeting. However, about 50 of its employees attended, wearing yellow safety vests and carrying signs underscoring the importance of one of Seneca County’s biggest employers.
The possibility of Local Law No. 7 of 2016 being enacted was the reason for their appearance.
A statement issued by Seneca Meadows District Manager Kyle Black at the meeting indicated that it would be considered a breach of the community benefits agreement between the landfill and the town if the law is adopted, and that all benefits to Seneca Falls would be suspended immediately if the law is passed.
