DTE Gas is converting landfill gas to natural gas for its Detroit residential customers.

The subsidiary of DTE Energy Co. said in a news release that it is providing pipeline-quality natural gas from the Sauk Trail Hills landfill in Canton, Mich., as part of its BioGreenGas program.

Residential natural gas customers can subscribe to the program for $2.50 a month. DTE Gas said it is one of the first utilities in the country to develop such a program.

Clean Energy Renewable Fuels (CERF) invested about $20 million in building the plant to purify the biogas at the landfill. DTE Pipeline Co. invested about $2 million to build a pipeline and a meter station there.
