German Metals Recycler Expanding to America with New Unit

A German metals recycler is establishing its first U.S. recycling operation with a facility in South Carolina that should begin full operations in September.

MAIREC, based in Alzenau, Germany, is investing $4.6 million in its first overseas venture. The company, which specializes in the recovery of high-valued rare metals from recycled goods, is leasing a 50,800-sq.-ft. facility in Spartanburg, S.C. MAIREC expects to create 35 jobs during the next five years, according to a news release.

The new operation will allow the company to meet growing demand in both the North American and global markets and serve its established client base in North America.
“Being present in North America and servicing this market is a major milestone for our company, and we are glad to be able to bring our technology and know-how and combine it with the business-friendly and open environment of South Carolina,” said MAIREC President Mikhail Khaimov.

The company’s customer base covers a range of industries, including automotive, chemical, electronics, petrochemical, pharmaceuticals, porcelain, solar, surface technology and telecommunications.

Precious metals recycling has spurred growth in the market. In June metals recycling firm Metallix Refining Inc. acquired a precious metals recycling facility in Maxton, N.C., from Umicore Precious Metals Recycling.

In 2013 Highlight Networks Inc. bought Acme Electronics Recycling LLC. Highlight Networks does recycling, refining, metals trading and asset recovery, with a focus on precious metals refining from electronic waste.
