Seattle Removes Large Metal Trash Bins from Capitol Hill

While some think the bins pose a public safety risk, others believe that removing the bins won’t stop muggings and will increase business costs.

In an effort to reduce the dangerous behavior tied to large metal trash bins, the City of Seattle is in the process of removing the bins from Capitol Hill. To date, the city has removed approximately 100 bins.

While some think the bins pose a public safety risk, others believe that removing the bins won’t stop muggings and will increase business costs.

Large metal trash bins are being tied to dangerous behavior on Capitol Hill so now the city is trying to make oversize bins a scarce sight.

The bins have long populated the public right of way on Capitol Hill. They serve the thriving business district and the many apartment buildings. However, starting last week, Seattle has been working to make most of them disappear. About 100 have been removed so far.

Sierra Hansen, executive director with the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, said the trash bins are more than unsightly. A city task force also found they pose a public safety risk.
