Berkeley County, W.Va., Finds New Market for Plastics
The county was on the hunt for a new market for plastic materials when its only plastics vendor terminated its contracts.
The Berkeley County, W.Va., Solid Waste Authority announced it has reached an agreement with Harrisburg, Pa.-based plastics recycler Trigon to continue the county’s plastics recycling program.
The county was on the hunt for a new market for plastic materials when its only plastics vendor, Winchester, Va.-based Southern Scrap Inc., acted on a termination clause in all of its suppliers’ contracts, according to a report in The Journal.
The county intends to develop a one-year agreement with Trigon and then revisit the program. The only major difference in the new agreement is Trigon does not accept bulky plastic recyclables and dark colored plastics, including laundry baskets, totes, barrels and toys, according to the report.
The Journal has more information:
The Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority announced it has reached a solution just weeks after learning the entity had until the end of 2019 to find a new market for the plastic materials residents dispose of through the county’s voluntary recycling program.
In a press release Tuesday morning, Clint Hogbin, chairman of the BCSWA, said the entity has reached an agreement with Trigon, a plastics recycling company out of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that uses plastic containers to create plastic lumber.
“The Berkeley County SWA is very pleased to continue to offer a free comprehensive plastic container recycling services for the residents of Berkeley County,” Hogbin said in a statement to The Journal. “We are also very appreciative for the assistance provided by Trigon and the Martinsburg Rescue Mission. Without those two partners, this important aspect of the county's recycling program may not exist.”
