The Wisconsin State Journal has a nice piece explaining how a local partnership between the city of Madison and a local company handles foam recycling. The city works with Uniek Manufacturing in nearby Waunakee. The partnership has been in place since 2012.

According to the report:

Uniek accepts block polystyrene packaging material, cups, coolers, egg cartons and food containers. The manufacturer, however, cannot accept dirty polystyrene, packing peanuts, polystyrene insulation or dirty meat trays.

Non-Madison residents can drop off polystyrene at Uniek’s plant at 805 Uniek Drive in Waunakee.

Johnson said without the partnership with Uniek, much of the city’s Styrofoam waste would end up in landfills. He said that along with dropping off polystyrene products, residents can further reduce waste by simply purchasing and using less of the material.
