More Than 15,000 Single-Use Plastic Bags Removed from Great Lakes Basin

This year, volunteers collected more than 15,000 single-use plastic bags and about 39,000 pounds of trash from the Great Lakes Basin.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers work to remove plastic bags and garbage from the Great Lakes and surrounding areas. This year, the volunteers collected more than 15,000 single-use plastic bags and about 39,000 pounds of trash from the Great Lakes Basin.

Every year, hundreds of volunteers work to clear plastic bags and other garbage from areas along the Great Lakes and its tributaries.

It’s an effort that takes place through the Alliance for the Great Lakes. The group leads clean-up events in cities like Buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago.

This year, the group's workers collected 431 plastic bags in the western New York region.  Across the Great Lakes Basin, over 15,000 single-use plastic bags.
