SWANA Announces New Safety Initiatives
The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is pleased to announce two new safety initiatives, as it puts its new strategic plan into action.
These new safety initiatives are the first of many that SWANA expects to implement over the next five years.
On June 1, SWANA will submit an application for a Susan Harwood training grant offered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The grant will be used to train collection workers and managers in ergonomic hazard awareness and prevention. OSHA expects to announce grant recipients in September 2015. If SWANA’s grant application is approved, training events will be held at SWANA’s Training Centers and in other locations. In addition, SWANA will provide online training sessions.
“Our application for the Susan Harwood training grant is another important step in SWANA building a more robust safety program,”said SWANA International Board President Brian Tippetts.“A training program for ergonomic hazard awareness and prevention is what the solid waste industry needs to reduce these types of injuries.”
In an effort to continue increasing safety awareness, SWANA Executive Director and CEO David Biderman will host a special safety webinar, 10 Ways to Reduce Accidents and Injuries, on June 16. The webinar is sponsored by SWANA’s Arizona Chapter, Reflective Apparel Factory, DaDee Manufacturing, Golder Associates and Concorde, Inc.
“I am pleased that SWANA is increasing its focus on safety and will provide important information to our members and other industry professionals to improve worker and public safety,” stated SWANA Executive Director and CEO David Biderman. “I hope many companies and local governmental agencies will participate in this important webinar.”
Biderman added that he successfully obtained and managed seven OSHA grants while at the National Solid Wastes Management Association, and is cautiously optimistic about SWANA’s application.

RouteSmart Technologies to Debut New Product at WasteExpo
RouteSmart Technologies will debut a new product at WasteExpo. The new product – RouteSmart for ArcGIS® Standard Edition – is a highly functional and affordable solution for public works operations and private haulers seeking more efficient routes. RouteSmart Technologies’ waste management experts Jessica Cearfoss and Doug Hill will be on hand to demonstrate this new streamlined toolset and alternative ways to deploy hosted versions of RouteSmart in order to minimize IT investments of on-premise hardware.

Some advantages of RouteSmart Standard include:
Create routes based on driver territory preferences to center routes around familiar areas
Create route territories based on desired number of routes with RouteSmart’s advanced solvers
Quickly optimize route sequences to minimize travel distance for large residential routes
Use Route Sets to model varying equipment sizes for smaller and larger vehicles
Use the RouteSmart Export Wizard to send optimized route information to telematics systems
Improve routes in very large service territories faster and more efficiently than with any other solution

Make Garbage Truck Service Bays More Productive: Visit Rotary Lift at WasteExpo
Rotary Lift’s wireless Mach Series mobile column lifts provide unobstructed access to the pumps, hoses and other hydraulic components on refuse trucks. They can also be moved in and out of the service bay when not in use, which helps refuse fleet operators create a more versatile shop. Rotary Lift will have a wireless Mach Series mobile column lift in its booth at WasteExpo next month, so attendees can see firsthand all the benefits the lift offers. The lift will be holding a Heil PT 1000™ rear loader refuse collection vehicle in Rotary Lift booth 1031. WasteExpo runs June 2-4 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“Mach Series mobile column lifts are easy to operate and fast to set up, so users can efficiently conduct preventative maintenance checks and repairs,” says Doug Spiller, heavy-duty product manager for Rotary Lift. “Plus, they are completely portable. That means refuse fleet operators can add a lift to a flat bay without dedicating that space to a permanent lift. The Mach Series lift can be wheeled in and out of the bay as needed, or used throughout the facility. This unmatched versatility helps fleet operators maximize their often limited resources.”
Mach Series mobile column lifts are battery-operated and available with capacities of 13,000 lbs. or 18,000 lbs. per column. They can be ordered in sets of two, four, six or eight columns, so customers can buy the right amount of capacity for the vehicles they service. Since the columns are positioned outside each wheel, Mach Series mobile column lifts provide unlimited access to service under-vehicle hydraulic components.
Rotary Lift’s WasteExpo booth will also include an 18,000 lb. capacity jack stand designed for heavy-duty vehicles, and the MW-500 mobile wheel lift. The MW-500 wheel lift can raise, transport and position any size wheel or tire weighing up to 500 lbs., allowing one technician to complete heavy-duty wheel and tire jobs that usually require two or more people.
To learn more about Mach Series mobile column lifts and the full line of heavy-duty Rotary Lift products, stop by Rotary Lift booth 1031 at WasteExpo, contact your local Rotary Lift distributor, visit www.rotarylift.com/LIFTS/Mobile-Columns or call (800) 640-5438. Creative Microsystems Inc., a global leader of on-board truck scales and developer of LoadMan weighing systems and TRUX Route Management Systems Inc., a leading software solutions provider for the waste and recycling industry, today announced a technology partnership and integration. The partnership provides mutual customers a comprehensive solution delivering accurate, real-time customer, load and route data to the driver and back-office instantly.
“We’re very pleased to expand our partner network by adding TRUX, a respected and proven route and waste management software solution,” said Larry Santi, founder and president of Creative Microsystems Inc. “Our goal is to help our customers drive efficiency and profitability by providing them with the technology they need to accurately measure loads, collect data, and easily analyze for better business results. We’re happy to come together with another industry leader like TRUX to deliver an integrated solution.”
LoadMan on-board truck scales are simple to install on the full range of refuse trucks and work seamlessly with TRUX software applications. Patented weigh-in-motion technology from LoadMan accurately weighs each load, net vehicle weight and provides a date and time stamp. The TRUX Driver Assist application works on any Android-enabled tablet in the cab and transfers data real-time to the back office for immediate use and analysis.
“The LoadMan/TRUX solution has dramatically improved our ability to create efficiencies, automate processes – many of which used to be manual – and better manage our business,” said Vince Moceri, president of Windsor Disposal Services. “Our drivers can now solely focus on their routes, while data is being collected automatically and sent to our back office. The integration is seamless and we’re very pleased with the reliability, accuracy and ease-of-use of the system. Both companies stand behind their products and are always available to for guidance and support.”
“The TRUX/LoadMan solution has closed a substantial gap. It is now possible to obtain accurate, real-time on-board weights from the field with a cost-effective solution. Reliable and accurate weights from LoadMan allow TRUX to dynamically charge for overweight containers in real time as well as establish accurate profitability on all commercial services,” said David Ische, vice president of sales and marketing at TRUX.
“We’re excited to partner with LoadMan on-board scales, one of the most advanced and reliable truck scales on the market. It’s a perfect complement to the TRUX solution,” Ische added.
LoadMan and TRUX will be exhibiting at Waste Expo in June (booths 1557 and 1537, respectively).
