What You Need to Know About St. Paul, Minn.’s Residential Franchise Zone System

The city of St. Paul, Minn., is gearing up to launch a residential franchise zone system on October 1. With the new system, haulers will be assigned zones to collect trash from one- to four-unit homes and small apartment buildings.

In anticipation of the roll out, St. Paul Public Works has created informational brochures featuring haulers, collection days, cart sizes and service options that will be mailed out to residents and an interactive map outlining zones and haulers that will be posted to the city’s website in early August.

In St. Paul, the days of choosing your own trash hauler are almost over. Beginning Oct. 1, organized trash collection for residents of one- to four-unit homes and small apartment buildings will be handled by haulers assigned to zones.

St. Paul Public Works sent informational brochures to the printer this week, and an interactive map indicating hauler areas will be posted to the city’s website in early August.

“I know the question will be, ‘Who is my new hauler?’ We don’t know that yet,” said Lisa Hiebert, a spokeswoman for public works. “The consortium (of trash haulers) is still working on the maps. Nothing is finalized yet.”
