Berry Global 2023 Sustainability Report Highlights Emissions Reduction Success, Accomplishments

Berry Global Group, Inc released its 2023 Sustainability Report earlier this week, noting that the company has made great progress striving for its sustainability goals and is ahead of schedule on its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reduction targets.

Berry Global Group, Inc released its 2023 Sustainability Report earlier this week, noting that the company has made great progress striving for its sustainability goals and is ahead of schedule on its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reduction targets.

According to the report, Berry Global completed its short-term goals for reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions two years ahead of schedule. Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions were cut by 26% compared to 2019, meeting the company’s goal of cutting GHG by 25% by 2025. Berry Global is closing in on its goal for Scope 3 emissions as well, cutting GHG emissions by 21% with a goal of 25%.

The company also notes that it received an “A” environmental, social, and governance (ESG) rating last year from MSCI for its progress managing ESG risks and opportunities.

“Through a deep commitment to innovation, customer service, and a people-first culture, our company’s long-term vision is to be the leading source for sustainable packaging,” said Kevin Kwilinski, CEO of Berry Global.

“Whether across the products we design and develop, our operations, or how we engage with others, our results are deeply rooted in meeting customer needs by delivering on the many benefits of packaging in a way that accelerates the transition to a circular, net-zero economy."

Other highlights from the report include that Berry Global achieved 86% reusable, recyclable, or compostable fast-moving consumer good packaging, successfully increased the use of circular plastics by 10% through investments and partnerships, and increased the use of renewable electricity across the entire business by 65%.

Additionally, Berry Global stresses the importance of its new recycling facility in Leamington Spa in the UK. This new facility uses Berry Global’s CleanStream recycling technology, offering the world's first closed-loop system to mechanically process household waste polypropylene (PP) back into contact-sensitive packaging.
