A man was killed in Galveston, Texas, at a transfer station. According to reports, the accident happened after the victim got out of his vehicle to unload trash and was run over by a front end loader.

The incident comes just as the industry is taking a renewed look at industry safety. A new report from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) documents 98 fatalities directly related to municipal solid waste (MSW) collection, processing and disposal occurred in the United States in the 12-month period between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. Lately, the number of incidents seems to have spiked a bit, with at least three fatalities recorded for three straight weeks, according to SWANA.

The Galveston County Daily News has more on the accident:

No charges had been filed related to the incident, Gray said. The driver of the front-end loader volunteered to be tested for drugs and alcohol

The name of the victim will not be released until his next of kin could be notified. Gray said the man was not an island resident.

The transfer station is owned by the city, but property is leased and operated by Republic Services.

A Republic Services manager at the scene on Tuesday declined to comment beyond saying the victim was not a Republic Services employee.
