Fort Wayne, Ind., Candidate Challenges Mayor to Fix Collection Issues
The Republican mayoral nominee is challenging the current mayor to renegotiate the city’s trash collection contract amid missed pickups.
Tim Smith, the Republican mayoral nominee in Fort Wayne, Ind., is challenging his opponent, Mayor Tom Henry, to fix the city’s trash collection problems.
During a press conference on June 21, Smith explained he wants the city’s hauler Red River Waste Solutions to rework its contract with the city due to missed trash collections over the last 18 months. He noted that city residents should not have to worry about “basic city services getting done.”
However, Henry argued that the contract does not need renegotiating, adding Red River has missed collections due to a shortage of commercial garbage truck drivers.

Republican Mayoral nominee Tim Smith called on his November opponent, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, to take action to help fix the city’s trash collection problems.
“The people of Fort Wayne should not worry about basic city services getting done,” Smith said at a Friday afternoon press conference.
Smith said he wants the mayor to get Red River Waste Solutions back to the negotiating table to rework the contract it has with the city. He wants the contract to have a definition of what a breach is and what good performance looks like. He also said if Red River refuses to come back to the negotiating table, Mayor Henry should impose the maximum amount of fines allowed under the current contract until Red River agrees to negotiate.
