It may not have grabbed as many headlines as the company’s purchase of Waste Services Inc. in Ontario, but Toronto-based IESI-BFC Ltd. closed 2010 with a significant acquisition.

In late December, IESI-BFC announced that it had purchased the collection, transfer and landfill assets of St. Louis-based Fred Weber Inc. for $159 million in cash. Included in the purchase was the Fred Weber landfill, which is the largest landfill in the state of Missouri by volume, according to IESI-BFC. Located in the western part of the St. Louis metropolitan area, the landfill has a remaining lifespan of approximately 80 years and no daily volume limit, IESI-BFC says.

“Securing this landfill with its strategic proximity to the St. Louis market, together with the acquired waste collection and transfer assets, substantially improves our operational presence in the St. Louis marketplace,” said Keith Carrigan, vice chairman and CEO of IESI-BFC.

In other acquisition news, Houston-based WCA Waste Corp. agreed to buy certain assets from Freeport, Fla.-based Emerald Waste Services. The assets include two landfills, one transfer station and three hauling operations.

The landfills are located in Mississippi. The transfer station and hauling operations are located in central Florida, and the hauling operations consist of 115 residential, commercial and roll-off routes. The assets consist of 220 employees and generate approximately $37 million in total revenue, according to WCA Waste.
