Miramar Landfill Viable Through 2030

New city recycling policies and trash compaction methods have extended by eight years the projected life of the Miramar landfill, San Diego’s only active dump.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Wednesday that the 1,500-acre landfill, which was expected to run out of capacity in 2022, is now projected to remain viable through 2030.

“The city of San Diego continues to innovate and improve to the benefit of our environment and taxpayers,” Faulconer said during a press conference at the landfill. “We’ve increased the landfill’s capacity while at the same time making sure we recycle as much of our trash as possible so it never reaches the landfill.”

A key element of the landfill’s longer life expectancy is San Diego’s “zero waste” policy, which the City Council unanimously approved last month.
