N.J. Town Says It's Giving State the Boot from Landfill Property

The battle over possession of the Keegan Landfill is heating up, with Kearny recently issuing an eviction notice of sorts to the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority, the tenant operating the dump at the site.
Kearny officials last week voted to issue a notice to "quit/demand for possession and compliance with lease obligation," which translates into a letter demanding that the NJSEA leave the property when its lease expires on June 30.
That includes removing all equipment from the site, leaving a flat plateau of at least 45 acres at the top of the landfill and establishing a post-closure escrow fund to deal with issues including monitoring of wells and vapor emitted from the site.
The town's lease with the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, which was absorbed by the NJSEA last year, allows the state agency to dump construction debris to build a 65-foot cap on the landfill, a contaminated property environmental experts have determined is suitable only for recreational uses once it is capped.
