Omaha’s Recycling Processor Owes City $170K

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert has endorsed entering into a new five-year contract with the city’s recycling processor but wants to first see the company make good on what it currently owes the city.

Firstar Fiber, which processes the materials collected in the city’s recycling program for resale on the open market, currently owes the city $170,000. The company has not made its monthly payment to the city since December.

Firstar said it couldn’t afford to pay the city for the paper, plastic and metal recyclables because a significant drop in the national market for recycled materials has cut company revenues.
