The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality fined a lamp recycling facility $360,000 for illegally disposing hazardous waste in a sand and gravel pit near the Salt River in 2009.
Veolia ES Technical Solutions is facing the civil penalty, which is subject to court approval, for disposing crushed lamps, intact fluorescent lamps, intact metal halide lamps and other lamp-related materials in a pit about 600 feet from the Salt River, according to an ADEQ statement issued Friday.
According to the statement, officers from the department determined that samples in the pit were above regulatory thresholds for mercury.
