UW-L Graduate Student Mixes Ash and Trash in Landfill Research

Dan Liska, a graduate student in microbiology at UW-La Crosse, is mixing ash and trash in the basement of Cowley Hall.

Liska is testing whether adding fly ash from Xcel Energy to waste can safely make that waste degrade faster, freeing up space in landfills.

Liska is working in partnership with the director of the Solid Waste Department for La Crosse County, Hank Koch, and the two are hoping that mixing ash and waste will lead to a faster breakdown of waste without creating any dangerous chemical mixtures.
