Waste Management, 3E Develop Hazardous Waste Program for Retailers
Waste Management Inc. and 3E Co. have developed a program to help retailers manage their hazardous waste.
The Hazardous Waste Compliance Solutions program provides retailers with data, tools and support to help them implement their own process-based plan. Designed so it can be operated by employees at any level, the program can help with immediate decision support, such as determining which products are hazardous wastes and how they should be handled, stored and labeled for proper disposal. The Universal Product Code–level data provided also can be used to evaluate goods and identify ways to minimize waste generation and reduce costs, the companies said in a news release.
Powered by the product and regulatory databases of 3E, an environmental compliance services company, the program contains a wide range of product safety and regulatory compliance data, including classification, transportation, environmental, ecological and disposal considerations. A team of regulatory analysts continually review and maintain the databases to ensure the information reflects the most up-to-date information available, including regulatory changes or ingredient changes from the manufacturer. This data feeds into and is synchronized with a specially designed handheld scanning device that allows employees simply to scan products, enter key information and receive instructions on how to properly handle the product.
“Accurate and comprehensive regulatory data is the cornerstone of environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives,” said Eric Dixon, vice president of Waste Management’s Sustainability Services. “As regulatory authorities continue to heighten enforcement in the retail sector, it is essential for retailers to implement comprehensive hazardous waste management programs.”
