Akron, Ohio is expanding its glass recycling program following a successful launch last year.

The program, in one year, collected almost 180,000 pounds of glass from residents. Now, the city is adding several new locations to its glass recycling program, featuring the hard-to-miss purple glass collecting bins. The purple bins can hold up to seven tons of glass and are emptied weekly.

“We've collected 80 tons of material over the last year in the bins,” said Mayor Shammas Malik. “We are really excited about how to make this accessible to folks all throughout the city.”

On top of being a successful recycling program, the city is also finding it to be financially successful, as the program generated $1,600 in the past year.
