Call2Recycle, Canada’s premier battery collection and recycling program, has teamed up with Longo’s, a prominent grocer in the country, to launch a new initiative to provide accessibility for battery recycling.

With this partnership, Longo’s continues to drive positive and sustainable changes in its mission to minimize its environmental impact. Customers now have the opportunity to return their end-of-life batteries to any of the 37 participating Longo’s locations during their regular shopping trips.

Joe Zenobio, Call2Recycle Canada president, commented, “Call2Recycle is excited to begin this collaboration with Longo’s as part of our efforts to make it easier and more convenient for Canadians to recycle batteries. Through this partnership with a leading, like-minded organization, we continue taking a leading role in the province to expand battery recycling diversion and educate Ontarians about safe recycling practices in a manner that is approachable and accessible. We are pleased to partner with the Longo’s team and give Ontarians the opportunity to drop batteries off on their next shopping trip and protect the environment effortlessly.”

Longo’s officially launched its battery recycling program at 37 GTA stores on September 12, 2023, becoming part of Call2Recycle's vast network of over 2,600 convenient battery collection sites across the province. This initiative aims to encourage Ontarians to incorporate environmentally-friendly habits into their regular shopping routines. Collected batteries will undergo processing to retrieve valuable materials like metal alloys, which will be used to create new products such as silverware, bikes, and golf clubs, contributing to a circular economy.

Both Longo’s and Call2Recycle share a common vision of promoting environmentally responsible practices and have developed longstanding relationships with Ontario communities.

Call2Recycle already boasts the highest accessibility rate in Canada for battery recycling drop-off locations, with over 98% of Ontarians located within 15 kilometers of a collection point. The inclusion of Longo’s stores in this network is expected to further increase accessibility and boost recycling volumes in southern Ontario.

Deb Craven, Longo’s president,  expressed the company’s dedication to sustainability, stating, “At Longo’s, we are committed to minimizing our overall impact on the environment and do everything we can to ensure we fuel happier and healthier lives. Our partnership with Call2Recycle reinforces our commitment to Environmental Stewardship, one of our three Sustainability Pillars. The battery recycling program provides a significant opportunity for ourselves and our Guests to divert waste and lessen our impact on the environment.”
