More homes are being included in a newly adopted segregated recycling system in Cardiff, Wales which has proven to lower contamination rates.
Roughly 47,000 homes have already been using the segregated recycling system which asks residents to separate their recyclables into different collection units. So far, the city’s council has said the system has increased the quality of the recycling in Cardiff while lowered its contamination rate of collected recycling from 30% to 4% on average.
Homes received new bins and sacks for recyclables as well as information on how to properly use them. Glass bottles go into a new, blue caddy, metals plastics, and food and drink cartons in a red sack, and paper products in a blue sack. This new scheme went into effect for 37,000 homes in February earlier this year after a successful trial.
