On Mar. 4, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington and Richfield, Minn.-based electronics retailer Best Buy joined together to collect electronic equipment destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The organizations hosted a one-day event in Gautier, Miss., and collected a variety of e-waste including computers, monitors, printers and other electronic equipment, according to a press release. Residents were allowed to drop off the items for free. “EPA is helping to make sure yesterday’s electronic gadgets are not becoming tomorrow’s high-tech garbage,” EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson said in a statement. “By working with communities to collect and properly dispose of electronic wastes, we are working to protect the health of current and future generations of Gulf Coast residents.”
