This week, Fort Wayne City Council, Ind. discussed a 10-year contract with GFL Environmental for processing the city’s recycling.

Fort Wayne’s 11,800 tons of recycling next year could cost more than $1.4 million, or $125 per ton. The city would collect 80% of the revenue generated by the processed recyclables that can be sold, which is up 5% from the city’s current provider.

According to Matt Gratz, Fort Wayne’s solid waste manager, based on this year’s rates, the revenue could be nearly $600,000 next year.

The council gave the proposed contract unanimous preliminary support and is expected to make a final decision next week, which should see approval.
