Hormel Reduces Waste to Landfills by 1,000 Tons in 2013

Hormel Foods Corp. said that in 2013 it reduced the solid waste it sent to landfills by 1,000 tons, and reduced product packaging by 4.72 million pounds.

The Austin, Minn.-based food producer said in a news release that it has achieved 81 percent of its goal, which is to reduce solid waste sent to landfills by 3,300 tons in 2020. That goal would represent a 10-percent reduction in the waste Hormel sends to landfill.

The company said it is on track to achieve its goal sooner than expected.

Normalized total solid waste, or pounds per ton of production, was 24.2 in 2013, improving slightly from the year-ago level.

The product packaging reduction represents 35 percent of goal when combined with the company’s 2012 progress.
