Houston Recycling Firm Demands Investigation into Mayor Over Recycling Contract

George Gitschel, the founder of EcoHub LLC, on Wednesday has asked Houston’s comptroller to look into how Mayor Sylvester Turner handled the city’s solid waste contract.
In late June, Turner announced details regarding the city’s negotiations with FCC Environmental LLC. The Houston City Council will consider a vote on the contract later this month.
Gitschel called the deal “bid rigging” and also called on the city attorney to investigate Marvelette Hunter, a former consultant and lobbyist for EcoHub who now serves as Turner’s chief of staff.
The new deal comes about 18 months after a contract dispute emerged between the city and Waste Management. Eventually the two sides signed a two-year contract for $5.76 million that removed glass from the city’s curbside recycling collections.

EcoHub LLC proposes an innovative concept of one bin collection of all solid waste, which would, employ thousands, reduce the need for separate solid waste vehicles, routes and personnel, and eliminate the need for landfills, Gitschel claims.
Gitschel added that his system would save as much as $40million a year, as opposed to $2 million as pitched by other companies.
