How She Recycles: Elizabeth Montoya of Rubicon
April 22, 2020
Rubicon, an industry leader in providing cloud-based waste and recycling solutions for businesses, government and nonprofits, has launched a new blog series called “How I Recycle,” which lets employees share personal experiences and best practices in recycling.
First up: Elizabeth Montoya, Chief of Protocol and Investor Relations, based in Washington D.C.
Elizabeth says, “I have extra bins in my garage for items that cannot go into residential recycling, including bins for plastic film (accepted at most grocery stores), food waste (I love my local compost provider), wine corks (my local Whole Foods has bins for ReCORK), worn-out athletic shoes (Nike collects used shoes of any brand for its Reuse-A-Shoe program), used electronics and cords (Best Buy has an extensive electronic recycling program), and clothing and home goods in good condition (I drop off items at the Salvation Army).” We could all take a page out of her book to step up our at-home sorting and recycling routine.
Another great tip: “I also make a point to not use disposable goods for parties. Instead, I bought inexpensive plates, glasses, and silverware (including plastic tableware for kids) that can go in the dishwasher.”
And, a final piece of advice from Elizabeth: “Stay organized, and say ‘no’ to freebies that you don’t actually need. When you have too much stuff, it is easy to lose or forget things, let goods expire, or end up buying more than you need.” Well said!
