Illinois EPA Cites GMI Recycling Services After Tire Fire

Earlier this week, GMI Recycling Services in Ford Heights, Ill., experienced a tire fire onsite. Now, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has cited the facility for improper use for shredded tires.
GMI currently has an enforceable tire removal agreement, but the company has failed to remove its shredded tires from the property, which is raising safety concerns.
Even though the fire was put out on Tuesday, flare-ups continue to occur.

The Ford Heights recycling facility where a tire fire erupted Tuesday has been cited by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and referred to the Illinois Attorney General for improper storage of shredded tires, the state agency announced Wednesday.
GMI Recycling Services, 1705 Cottage Grove Ave. in Ford Heights, has an enforceable tire removal agreement, but the company failed to remove piles of tire shreds from the property, resulting in the ongoing response from local fire departments and government agencies, an IEPA release Wednesday stated.
The fire — which broke out Tuesday afternoon — is under control, but flare-ups continue. When the fire first erupted, black smoke from the fire could be seen from a number of communities in Lake County and reportedly even in Portage.
