Librec is bringing the first large recycling plant for electric car batteries to Switzerland which plans to open by the end of October 2024.

The new building plans to recycle 12,000 tonnes of electrical car batteries within its first year, according to Librec. The building is being built on a former paper factory in Biberist.

Batteries will be discharged and dismantled before being shredded and dried, resulting in a black mass to produce new batteries. Energy sucked from old batteries will be used for the recycling plant, reducing a third of the plant’s energy requirement.

“This recycling plant is the result of years of research,” says Librec founder Jodok Reinhardt.
