A hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. is working on new methods to prevent contamination in recycling as well as in its composting efforts. Complex rules of recycling often confuse the public when it comes to the matter, but this hospital is attempting to take the guessing game out of the equation.
Six of these new TrashBots from CleanRobotics were deployed in a Los Angeles hospital that interacted with more than 240,000 visitors in a three-month time period.
TrashBots have been responsible for reducing contamination in recycling and compost streams by 95 percent.
The TrashBot technology also provided 300 percent more accurate sorting compared to that of conventional trash receptacles.
The hospital with the new tech was able to increase their diversion rate by 50 percent. This was done by finding the top five landfill items that should be replaced by compostable materials with TrashBot’s data.
Lastly, the TrashBots can display educational content that resulted from the data collected from the machines. This included things like on-demand waste audits, carbon calculations, and contaminated items identified.
With the success of this first trial, the hospital is looking to increase the number of TrashBots at its location.
