W.R. Grace and Co. scientists want to start testing a new plastic recycling solution in Columbia, Md. but residents are pushing back.

W.R. Grace and Co. scientists want to start testing a new plastic recycling solution in Columbia, Md. but residents are pushing back.

Residents in the area are calling the proposal a threat to the community and have expressed concerns over emissions that could negatively impact their health.

"There are communities all around that could be impacted by emissions from this project, accidents, leaks. There's a whole host of problematic things that could happen that residents are extremely concerned about," said Lisa Krausz, the co-chair of the Stop the Grace Plastic Burning Project.

"False claims are circulating about the pilot project and our intentions. Let us be clear: We are not burning plastic; we are not manufacturing microplastics or producing PFAS or 'forever chemicals.' Moreover, Grace does not manufacture plastics at all,” said W.R. Grace and Co.
