Milton, Fla. to End Recycling Program, Cites Contamination as Main Factor

Another Florida city is ending its curbside recycling program starting Oct. 1, as residents of Milton will watch as the Milton Recycling Program ceases operation.

In a press release, signaling the program’s closure on Oct. 1, City Manager Ed Spears discusses the ongoing issues the city is having with its recycling materials and the contamination it’s been facing.

“The reality is that less than 10% of collected materials nationwide are actually recycled, and Milton has faced similar challenges,” said Spears.

“Over the past two years, none of our recycling loads have been accepted due to contamination. As a result, much of what we collect is sent directly to landfills, which defeats the purpose of the program and increases costs.”
