Nike has launched a new collection of sneakers, called Space Hippie. The sneakers are made from factory and post-consumer waste such as recycled polyester yarn, recycled foam, a blended “Crater foam” as well as recycled plastic water bottles, T-shirts and yarn scraps.

“We believe the future for product will be circular,” Nike’s VP of sustainable innovation Seana Hannah said. “We must think about the entire process: how we design it, how we make it, how we use it, how we reuse it and how we cut out waste at every step. These are the fundamentals of a circular mindset that inform best practices.”

Nike isn’t the only footwear company to target a low carbon and more circular manufacturing process. Veja, a French sneaker brand, has a new line of sneakers that are 53 percent bio-based and recycled. In addition, Adidas and Allbirds are collaborating to develop a sneaker with “the lowest carbon emissions.”
