Northern CA Waste Companies Adapt to Covid Constraints

Waste collectors and processors in Marin County, Calif., have managed to keep most of their routines intact since the Covid-19 pandemic struck, but they’ve had to make some modifications.

Marin Sanitary Service in San Rafael has suspended the recycling buyback program at its recycling center, and has also temporarily halted collection of bulky items. The company’s recycling center remains open and is accepting household hazardous waste, but social distancing rules are being imposed and barriers have been set up at the center. 

Recology, which serves the city of Novato and several West Marin communities, is requiring employees to have their temperature taken before reporting for work and providing face masks and face shields. The company has temporarily shuttered its hazardous waste and recycling center but is continuing to pick up bulky items.

The Redwood Landfill and Recycling Center in Novato is providing its workers with gloves, hand sanitizer, and safety gear, and equipment is wiped down at regular intervals.

Most haulers in Marin County are reporting declines in their commercial business but increases in residential volumes.
