Republic Services in North San Diego County has debuted its first electric recycling vehicle in the area, the first step in a move for an all-electric future.
The state of California requires that half of all heavy-duty truck sales be fully electric by 2035, but Brishen McGuire, General Manager at Republic Services, is aiming to reach that goal by 2028. To do this, McGuire plans to swap trucks that run on compressed natural gas to trucks using electric power. The move will be costly at first but save the company money in the long run due to less maintenance required.
“There’s less repairs that have to happen," McGuire said. "We’ve noticed brakes lasting a lot longer. I think I heard like 90% longer because of some of the regenerative braking that the trucks do.”
