Santa Rosa County, Fla., Nears Recycling Resolution

On Thursday, the commissioners of Santa Rosa County, Fla., will vote on a proposed three-year interlocal agreement with Emerald Coat Utilities Authority (ECUA) in an effort to end the county’s recycling issues.
Most of the county’s recycling issues are due to a closure of a facility ECUA used to process its recyclables in Montgomery.
For the past few months, county recyclables have been taken to local landfills alongside regular garbage, and the proposed agreement states that ECUA would deposit county recyclables for $11 a ton at a $9.5 million MRF that’s currently under construction at Perdido Landfill. The MRF is expected to open and accept waste this summer.

Recycling issues in Santa Rosa County will soon be remedied, barring an unexpected vote by the county commissioners at their Thursday meeting.
County commissioners discussed a proposed 3-year interlocal agreement with Emerald Coast Utilities Authority on Monday morning and moved the agenda without any objection to Thursday for further discussion.
The interlocal agreement states ECUA will deposit county recyclables at a Materials Recovery Facility currently under construction at Perdido Landfill with a transportation cost of $11 per ton. ECUA and Escambia County partnered to construct the $9.5 million facility, which is expected to be ready to accept waste this summer.
