It is now illegal to throw away batteries in Vermont as a new law has gone into effect this week that requires households to dispose of the batteries responsibly.

Before, it was illegal to throw away several different kinds of batteries into the trash, but now, as of this week, single-use and rechargeable batteries must be kept out of the trash.

Josh Kelly of Vermont’s Department of Environmental Conservation says batteries found in waste streams will be separated and officials will attempt to trace back to where the battery came from to enforce the law.

“Getting batteries out of the waste stream prevents more of the hazardous and dangerous for the environment and for people, and especially for waste and recycling workers. It’s critical that people take the steps to recycle responsibly and bring batteries to a drop-off location,” said Kelly.
