Staten Island, N.Y., Develops New Trash Can for Littering Drivers
The trash can is equipped with a large mesh background to help thrown trash make it into the bin.

In an effort to help littering drivers make their thrown trash into bins, Staten Island, N.Y., artist Scott LoBaido, Office of Councilman Matteo and the community group Where To Turn have created a new trash can equipped with a large mesh backboard.
The city is currently testing out pilot trash bins and monitoring the project.

Staten Islanders who can't be bothered to dispose of their trash before entering or after exiting their cars can now get rid of it from the comfort of their vehicles. That is, if they happen to be driving past the corner of North Gannon and Bradley avenues, where on Saturday the city installed a pilot version of new trash can with a special accessory designed to help drivers who insist on throwing garbage out the window get it into an appropriate receptacle.
The device, which is effectively a large mesh backboard, was designed by Staten Island artist Scott LoBaido, in conjunction with the Office of Councilman Matteo and the community group Where To Turn.
