Hawaiian WTE Facility to Start Construction in Late 2017
The facility will divert municipal solid waste from the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill.

BioEnergy Hawaii LLC plans to start construction on its $50 million resource-recovery and energy-conversion facility by the fourth quarter of next year. It plans to lease about 15 acres of land on a portion of the property to build and operate a facility that will divert municipal solid waste from the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill.

The project aims to increase the landfill diversion and recycling rate as well as reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional landfill disposal operations, according to the project’s recently released draft environmental assessment.
“Depending on how the draft EA goes, we’re projecting we will get good feedback, and once that happens, we’ll get those comments and address those comments,” Clint Knox, vice president of BioEnergy Hawaii, told PBN. “We’re hoping to get permits completed by the end of next year.”
The project is expected to be operational by the start of 2019.
