Circular enerG LLC, a Rochester, N.Y.-based startup, is proposing to build a $365 million waste-to-energy (WTE) facility in Romulus, N.Y., between lakes Seneca and Cayuga. The facility would burn up to 2,640 tons of waste per day and draw 445,000 gallons of water a day from Seneca Lake.

This proposal has received negative feedback, with environmentalists and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo opposing the project. Cuomo recently released a statement saying that the facility is not consistent with his administration's environmental goals and that importing and burning municipal solid waste in one of New York’s environmentally sensitive areas is just not appropriate.

Cuomo issued a statement today saying the incinerator plan by a company called Circular enerG is "not consistent with my administration's goals for protecting our public health, our environment, and our thriving agriculture-based economy in the Finger Lakes."

The proposal submitted to the town of Romulus says the incinerator would burn up to 2,640 tons of garbage per day. The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency incinerator near Syracuse, burns about 990 tons per day.
