Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum now represents Connecticut-based Viking Peak Energy Fuels. And he is working with the City of Clarksville, Tenn., to find new and innovative ways to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Santorum is proposing a waste-to-energy (WTE) plan for the city, which would convert the city's trash into usable energy via Viking Peak's technology.
With the plan, Viking Peak estimates it could reduce communities’ dependency on landfilling by 90 percent. Additionally, the company could remove recyclables from collected solid waste via “state-of-the-art equipment.”

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum made Clarksvillle and Franklin two of his first U.S. stops on Tuesday as he begins traveling about pitching a plan to eliminate landfill dependence over time through one company's waste-to-energy initiative.
The idea to burn solid waste for energy consumption is not new to the Bi-County Solid Waste Board serving Montgomery and Stewart counties, but the former Pennsylvania senator who is now working in the private sector brought his version to Middle Tennessee, and local officials say they want to know more, and put pencil to paper to examine the cost efficiency of burning trash for energy fuel, versus burying it.
